Meet My Menu reads restaurant menus aloud and answers questions about them by voice. This page explains what information the app uses for that, why, and the choices available to you.

Who this covers

This policy applies to the Meet My Menu web app (app.meetmymenu.com) and the Meet My Menu AI iOS app, which is the same app packaged for the App Store. Both are referred to as "the app" below.

Information the app collects

Account information

Signing in with Google or Apple shares your email address (and, the first time, your name) with the app; Google or Apple verifies the identity token on the server, and the app never receives or stores your Google or Apple password. If you choose to hide your email with Apple's private relay, the app receives that relay address instead of your real one. You can also use the app with a typed email address without Google or Apple Sign-In. Cloud sync is unavailable with email-only sign-in.

Profile and preferences

Allergies, foods you dislike, cuisines you like, past orders, a running history of restaurants you've asked about, and accessibility settings (theme, text size, speech rate, preferred voice). These exist so the app can warn about relevant allergens and tailor recommendations. They are not shared with anyone except as described below.

Saved restaurants and menus

When you save a restaurant, its name, menu contents, source, and location are stored so you can reopen it later without re-scanning or re-searching.

Menu photos

The camera is used to photograph menus so they can be read aloud. Menu images are sent to OpenAI for analysis (see below). The app does not keep a copy of an image as part of the normal scan-and-read flow.

Voice audio

The microphone is used for spoken questions and commands. Audio may be sent to OpenAI for transcription. Cartesia may receive text in order to generate spoken responses. Meet My Menu does not make a recording of microphone audio as part of that flow.

Usage information

The app logs screens used, actions taken (such as scanning a menu or saving a restaurant), timing, success or failure, and device details for debugging. Depending on the action, logs may include your email address, the text of a question, or the app's reply. Meet My Menu does not sell this information or use it for advertising.

Device information

App version and browser/device user agent are logged alongside usage information, for debugging.

How the information is used

  • To read menus aloud, answer questions about them, and warn about allergens you've told the app about.
  • To sync your profile and saved restaurants across devices, if you're signed in with Google or Apple.
  • To understand what's working and what isn't, so the app can be improved.

Meet My Menu does not run ads, does not use advertising trackers, and does not sell personal information.

Who information is shared with

The app relies on a small number of service providers to function. Each receives only what it needs to do its specific job:

  • OpenAI: processes menu photos, conversation questions, and voice transcription to generate the app's responses.
  • Cartesia: an alternate text-to-speech provider, used for some of the app's spoken voices.
  • Google: verifies your identity when you sign in with Google. The app only receives your verified email and name, not your Google password or account access.
  • Apple: verifies your identity when you sign in with Apple. The app only receives your verified email (or private relay address, if you choose to hide your email) and, on first sign-in, your name, never your Apple password or account access.
  • Vercel: hosts the app and its backend storage (profile/restaurant sync, usage logs, and, if enabled, saved menu photos).
About allergen information: Meet My Menu surfaces ingredient and allergen information it can find so you know what to ask about. It is not a substitute for confirming directly with restaurant staff, and mistakes in source menus or in what the app understood are possible.

Camera and microphone access

The app only accesses the camera when you're actively scanning a menu, and the microphone only when you're actively asking a question or giving a voice command. Neither runs in the background.

Where data is stored

You can read menus without an account; saving a restaurant requires signing in. Your profile and saved restaurants are stored on your device first. If you're signed in with Google or Apple, that same data is also synced to Meet My Menu's cloud storage so it's available if you switch devices. All traffic between the app and its servers is encrypted (HTTPS).

How long data is kept

Local data stays on your device until you clear it or sign out. Cloud-synced profile data, saved restaurants, and usage logs are retained until you request deletion or the service's retention practices change.

Your choices

  • Use the app with a typed email instead of Google or Apple Sign-In when you do not want to use cloud sync.
  • Clear your saved restaurants and profile from Settings at any time.
  • Request a copy or deletion of your cloud-stored data by emailing contact@meetmymenu.com, or by using Delete account in the app's Settings.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to certain processing. Email contact@meetmymenu.com to exercise any of these.

Children's privacy

Meet My Menu is not directed at children under 13, and the app does not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the "last updated" date at the top of this page will change with it.
